These are measurements from one current integrated bed-frame and headboard family, not standard headboard sizes. Standalone, wall-mounted, upholstered, and wingback products can differ substantially.
Separate mattress width from product width
A headboard can align with the mattress, match the frame exterior, or extend beyond both. Record the selected product’s full width rather than adding a fixed allowance to the mattress.
Measure height from the stated reference point
A manufacturer may list total product height, panel height, or height above the floor. Keep that reference point with the number so wall, window, and outlet checks use the intended measurement.
Measurement method
Start with the product and space you actually have.
- 1
Record the mattress or opening. Keep the inner width as a separate reference.
- 2
Measure the full width. Include posts, wings, upholstery, and trim.
- 3
Identify the height reference. Distinguish total height from panel height above the mattress.
- 4
Map the wall. Mark windows, outlets, switches, trim, and nearby furniture.
Questions, answered
Frequently asked questions
Are headboard sizes standardized?
No. Mattress names provide a starting category, but headboard width, height, posts, wings, and mounting geometry vary by product.
How much wider should a headboard be than a mattress?
There is no universal allowance. The current integrated examples here are about 6 inches wider than their listed mattress openings; other designs can add less or much more.
